Writing an “about me” page feels both humbling & odd. But it matters. If you’re here, you deserve to know who’s behind the words I write—so you can decide if you trust what I have to say.
You might know me from my posts on X or LinkedIn.
You might know me from seeing me speak at events.
You might know me from Braintrust Ag, where I built an online ag community.
You might know me from my email newsletters (Braintrust Ag & The Gravel Road).
You might know me from when I sold feed, seed, and fertilizer for over a decade.
You might know me as your attorney.
You might know me through church.
You might know me from school—elementary, high school, or college.
You might know me from the gym.
Or maybe you just crossed paths with me online or in real life sometime in the past few years.
Regardless if you know me or not, here’s the quick summary:
I grew up in rural South Dakota on a small (hobby) farm with a tight-knit family.
Started working at 13 for a dog trainer/farmer and caught the ag and business bug early.
Sports took center stage for much of my HS & college years, then I switched schools for an ag business degree.
Spent 10 years in ag retail, with a handful of entrepreneurial wins and losses along the way.
Got married (she’s awesome, by the way), and when daughters one and two showed up, I went to law school.
Became a lawyer, added another daughter and a son to the family (four kids = highly recommend), and started writing online.
Now:
I help families—mostly farm & small business owners—plan their estates and businesses at Thompson Law.
I’m working on my spiritual, mental, and physical health.
We’re focused on building a family legacy that lasts for generations.
